Good morning everyone!it is an honor to opportunity to present a report on chapter 7,my name is qiuyingyu ,from inorganic chemistry department,this is my partner chenfeng,~The subject/focus/topic of my presentation is As Long As Grass Grows or Water Runs,

We plan to be brief,so we have divided my presentation into 3 sections. Firstly chenfeng will give us a brief overview of this chapter,then I will make some analysis of some main piont,and sum up briefly.

Then I will analysis on some arguments of this chapter:

This phrase is the title of Chapter 7 in this book. It is taken from a message that was sent by President Andrew Jackson to the Choctaw and Cherokee Indians when they were going to be moved out of their homelands in the process of “Indian Removal.” In this message, Jackson is promising the Native Americans that the place where they are going will be theirs forever. He is promising them that they will be able to hold that land as long as grass grows or water runs which is, one would think, forever.

This sentiment is badly contradicted by the way in which the US government actually treated the Indians. The government would make treaties in which it would give Indians certain areas of land as reservations. But then, inevitably, something would happen that would make whites want the land that had been given to the Indians. When that happened, the Indians would be forced to make new treaties taking away some of the land and leaving them with smaller and smaller areas on which to live.

Here is my version of the basic Indian story. “Whites bribe/threaten Indians into signing a treaty, usually giving up a good chunk of their ancestral land. In return, they promise to be really nice to the indians. Later, when the whites decide that they really want some more land, specifically the pieces they forgot to take form the indians, they “kindly” tell the indians to give them the land, leave their homes forever, and move west. The indians either do try to make the journey, and at least half of them starve or succumb to diseases , and have their spirits broken. The other option is to refuse to move, and after making that decision the chief of the tribe delivers some beautiful speech on how the land is their home, and they will never leave. They play to the sympathy of the white settlers, but sadly the settlers have no sympathy, only a gigantic military. They march in the huge army, and either force march the indians or start a war that is basically over before it begins. Either way, the remaining indians end up moving westward.

And then let’s moved onto the similar/tragic fate of the Indian tribes
