1. Do you think it is ethical to engage in restructuring and delaying that result in massive reduction of position?

2. How would you feel if you were the boss in the work-out session being asked to leave the meeting while your subordinates discuss problems and suggest solutions to which you have to say “yes”, “no” or “require further study” ?

3. Why would other companies agree to their best practices being studied?

4. What do you think of evaluating the performance of managers not only on the achievement of results but also on the degree to which they share the organizational values?

5. How would you feel about setting unrealistic (stretch) objectives?

6. Should managers be ranked within their organizational unit? What would you suggest if one such unit is far superior to another unit with most of its managers being generally good managers and yet you still have to identify the bottom 10 percent?

7. Overall, how would you evaluate GE’s approach to organizational change? What are the advantages and possible problems?

1. As a CEO of GE, it is compulsory for Jack Welch to make GE be better by restructuring and delaying. Though it results in massive reduction of position, this measure saves labor costs, and makes communication and decision making be faster. Consequently, it is ethical.

2. I would be nervous but think it reasonable. On the one hand, I don’t know what my subordinates discuss and suggest, which makes me worry about how to answer questions and make decisions. On the other hand, my leaving let them speak freely and show my trust to them.

3. Because GE will supply the opportunity to other companies to study, besides, GE will share the achievement of learning with others.

4. A good performance manager may make mistakes in direction of GE, but a manager who performs excellently and makes full sense of organizational vales will develop GE with correct direction.

5. It will inspire staff to make every effort to work and work out their potentialities.

6. Yes. And I will change top 10 percent to top 15 and more, and decrease the percent of bottom.

7. It is a successful organizational change with gains in stock prices. Its change emphasizes on benefit and efficiency, which lets GE adapt to rapidly changing environment. When it refers to possible problems, flat organizational structure by restructuring and delaying will stress managers and distract managers’ strength, which leads to many other managerial questions.
