1.Is landscape design a needless luxury? Why should cities have beautiful public places?

D : Have you ever knew the New York Central Park which is the largest urban park in New York?

C : Oh! I know that! It is amazing and very beautiful! There are clear lakes、 flat lawn ，and all of them relax us citizens!

D : Yeah, but it covers 873 acres and cost lots of money when it was established! Do you think it is a needless luxury?

C : Though it has spent a lot of manpower material resources, the benefits it brings to people can not be measured by money.

D : Yeah, just as you said, these fascinated natural landscape can always relax our tired souls and our annoyance will be washed away.

C : And, it meets people’s demand of fresh air 、beautiful and comfortable sceneries. I think it is just what public places should provide with.

D : Certainly! Beautiful public places are in urgent need with the increasing of public stress. So I hope that more charming parks are built!

C : Honestly speaking，it depends. Developed countries can pay more attention to landscape design aimed to prompt the happiness in people’s lives while developing countries should still focus on their economy. After all, adequate food and clothing are vital.

D : So, now, conclusion can be made that landscape design in developing countries may be a luxury, but, if government have extra fund, landscape is pretty beneficial for the public.

2.Some people believe that government should protect natural landscape; others believe that cultural sites should be protected. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

D : Yesterday, I saw a news about Great Barrier Reef which is the largest coral reefs(珊瑚礁群) in the world. But, because of the global warming, the Great Barrier Reef is dying out.

C : Oh! What a pity! Some measures must be taken to preserve(保护) that pretty natural landscape!

D : Yeah, surely, people are moving heaven and earth to remain such a wonder.

C : Oh! Now, listen to me, suddenly, an odd idea crowds into my brain. In the past few years, many natural landscape and even cultural sites are being destroyed. If we can only choose one aspect to protect, which will you select?

D : Certainly I will choose natural landscapes!

C : Why?

D : Natural landscapes are made by nature. Their beauty and appeal(吸引力) can never be recreated by human. Once we lose them, they can not come back permanently.

C : But, in reality, it isn’t so serious as you say. Many natural landscapes are possible to be resumed(恢复).I will prefer the cultural sites.
