Scopeandpurpose

Decisionmakingwithinterdependentmultiplecriteriaisnormalinstandardbusinessdecisionmaking;inmcdmtheorythestandardassumptionistoassumethatthecriteriaareindependent,whichmakesoptimalmcdmsolutionslessusefulthantheycouldbe.Inthispaperwehavedevelopedamethodforbothdealingwithandmakinguseoftheinterdependenceofmultiplecriteria.

Interdependenceisafairlyobviousconcept:consideradecisionproblem,inwhichwehaveto ndax ∈Xsuchthatthreedi erentcriteriac1,c2andc3allaresatis ed,whenc1andc2aresupportiveofeachothers,c2andc3arecon icting,andc1andc3againaresupportiveofeachothers(withrespecttosomedirections).Unlessitisobvious,thechoiceofanoptimaldecisionalternativewillbecomeaverycomplexprocesswithanincreasingnumberofcriteria.Herewehavedevelopedasystematicwaytoevaluateandexploittheinterdependence,andwehavefoundawaytosolvedecisionproblemswithinterdependentmultiplecriteria.Intheprocesswehavealsolearnedthatthedecisionprocessismuchmoree ectivewithasingledecisionmakerthanwithagroupofdecisionmakers,eachofwhichisdefendingoneorsomeofthecriteria;inthelattercasetheinterdependencegetsconfusedwithtacticaldispositions,thebuildingofcoalitionsandnegotiationstrategies.
