DynamicModelingandSimulationofaDual-ClutchAutomatedLay-ShaftTransmission

Thispaperpresentsasystematicmodelforthesimulationandanalysisofapower-shifttransmissionthatfeaturesadual-clutchdesign.Thepapermodelsthekinematics,dynam-ics,andcontrolofthetransmissionfortheanalysisofpowertrainoverallperformanceandshifttransientcharacteristics.Themodelisimplementedinanobject-orientedsoft-waretool.Analyticalformulationsandlook-uptablesarebothusedformodelingofpowertraincomponents.Thevehiclesystemmodelisestablishedbyintegratingthevari-ouscomponentsandsubsystemmodelsaccordingtothetransmissionpower owandcontrollogic.Theinputtothesimulationmodelisthevehiclespeed-timepro leandtheoutputprovidesthespeedfollow-up,engine,andclutchoperationstatusforthedriverangeandshiftprocessesinvolved.Asanumericalexample,themodelisusedforavehicleequippedwiththepower-shifttransmissiontosimulatethespeedfollow-upoveraspeci eddriverangeandthedynamictransientsduringshifts.©2004AmericanInsti-tuteofPhysics. 1Introduction

Automatictransmissionsinmostpassengervehiclesuseplan-etarygeartrainsasthepowertransmittingunits.Inaplanetarytraintransmission,differentgearratiosarerealizedbycouplingaplanetarymembertotheinputandgroundinganothertothehous-ingalternatively.Althoughtheplanetarygeartraindesignhasbeenappliedintransmissionssincetheearlydaysofautomaticcars,ithastheintrinsicdrawbacksinstructurecomplexityandlowef ciencyduetothenatureofplanetarygearing.Asfueleconomyimprovementisbecomingeverincreasinglyimportant,transmissionswithlay-shaftgearingaregainingpopularityintheautomotiveindustry,especiallysoforapplicationsincompacttomidsizepassengervehicles.Thisisevidencedbythesuccessfulapplicationsoflay-shafttransmissionsinSaturnandHondamod-els 1 .

Inalay-shafttransmission,allgearaxesare xedwithrespecttoeachother.Therearetwotechnicallyfeasibledesignsforlay-shaftgearingtransmissions.Oneusesatorqueconverterforlaunchandhydraulicallyactivatedclutchesforshift,whiletheotherusesautomatedclutchandshiftselectorforlaunchandgearchangeoperations.Thelater,termedinautomotiveindustryasautomatedmanualtransmission AMT ,isactuallyamanualtransmissionwithanadded-oncontrolunitthatautomatestheclutchandshiftoperations.Similartomanualtransmissions,thereisaninterruptionoftorquetransmissionatagearchangesincetheengineiscutoffbytheclutchduringshift.Thistorqueinterrup-tionleadstounanticipatedpassengerfeelsonvehicleaccelerationdiscontinuityandishighlyuncharacteristicofconventionalauto-matictransmissions.Adual-clutchtransmissiondesignwasre-centlyproposedtoovercomethisintrinsicdrawback 2 .Inthisdesign,thetwoclutchesareengagedalternativelyindifferentspeedsandpowertransmissioncontinuesduringashiftthroughthecontrolofclutchslips.Ashiftprocessinvolvestheengage-mentoftheoncomingclutchandthereleaseoftheoffgoing

Asinanyothercontrolsystems,thesuccessofcontroldependsontheanalyticalmodelthateffectivelydescribesthedynamicsduringsystemoperation.Beforeaprototypeisbuilt,modelsimu-lationistheonlytoolfortheanalysisandevaluationontheper-formanceofvehicleequippedwithadual-clutchlay-shaftgearingtransmission.Inrecentyears,theeverincreasingdemandonve-hiclefueleconomyandpassengercomforthasledtothedevelop-mentofnewtypesoftransmissionsandnewcontroltechnologiesforpowertrainsystems 4–6 .Modelsimulationplaysanimpor-tantroleinthevalidationandcalibrationofsuchsystems,andhasthereforeattractedtheinterestsfrombothacademicandindustrialcommunities.Recentresearchesinpowertrainmodelingandsimulationareascovervarioustypesofpowertrainscurrentlyinproductionorunderdevelopment,includingconventionalauto-matictransmissions 7,8 ,continuouslyvariabletransmissions 9–11 ,andhybriddrivetrains 12,13 .Asrevealedbythelitera-turesearch,themodelingandcontrolofdualclutchAMTsystemsisstillanewareacontrarytothetechnologymaturityofothertypeoftransmissions.Thepurposeofthispaperistopresentasystematicmodelforthesimulationandanalysisofvehiclepow-ertrainsequippedwiththedual-clutchtransmissions.ThemodelisimplementedusingtheModelica/Dymolaprogramminglanguageinanobject-orientedenvironment.StandardcomponentmodelsavailableintheModelica/Dymolalibrary 14 aredirectlyusedfortheavoidanceofthelengthyderivationsofmathematicalequa-tionsgoverningcomponentcharacteristics.Emphasisisplacedonthedevelopmentofnonlibrarymodelssuchasshiftcontroller,clutchpressurecontrol,etc.,whicharespeci ctothetransmissionsystem.Allsubsystemmodels,suchasthedriver,engine,gearpairs,clutches,etc.,areintegratedintoanoverallvehiclesystemmodelbasedonpowertrainstructure,kinematicsandcontrollogic.

Thecontrolsystemforthedual-clutchAMTincludesshiftschedulecontrolandshiftprocesscontrol.Theshiftschedulecon-trollertriggersanupshiftordownshiftbasedonenginethrottleandvehiclespeedfeedbackandsignalstheengagingorreleasingoftheinvolvedclutches.Stateequationsgoverningthesystem
